You can't coach him – Mourinho opens up on his partnership with Cristiano Ronaldo

Jose Mourinho has spoken about his time as Cristiano Ronaldo's manager at Real Madrid.

Speaking to Football.com's Rio Ferdinand, Mourinho said, “You don't coach” Ronaldo.

Mourinho coached Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, winning LaLiga and Copa del Rey winners' medals.

However, he didn't always see eye to eye with Ronaldo, especially when he tried to rest him.

Mourinho said: “You have guys like Cristiano where you play Levante and you win five-nil and you tell the guy to relax and rest. “No, no, no, I can score one more goal!”

“When you have guys like that, you know the boat is in the water and you just let the boat go and in the end you enjoy the race.

“I think you don't coach him. You don't teach much, it's about being happy and creating an environment from a tactical point of view, from the ideas of football, where the player can show.”
