Chelsea’s nominees for Fans’ Footballer of the Year 2021 have been revealed as Edouard Mendy, Antonio Rudiger, N’Golo Kante and Jorginho – now you can vote for your favourite
Not many football clubs have had a better 2021 than Chelsea. Beginning the year with an unknown quantity, having replaced club legend Frank Lampard with former PSG head honcho Thomas Tuchel, few Blues may have predicted what was to come.
The club from SW6 infamously conceded just two goals, sweeping past Atletico Madrid, Porto, Real Madrid & Manchester City on the way to their second ever UEFA Champions League triumph against their English rivals.
The momentum by no means has stopped there, with the Blues claiming the European Super Cup ahead of Villarreal in August and beginning to look like the stand-out title favourites in the Premier League.
Footballer of the year can be defined in many ways, whether it’s off pitch contributions, sheer quality of performances or the player that’s made the biggest impact on the club – though in Chelsea’s case there is quite the choice.
We gave our resident Blues expert Sam Inkersole the unenviable task of selecting the four football.london nominees for Fans’ Footballer of the Year – here’s what he had to say

The Senegalese stopper has been outrageous in 2021 ever since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel. He kept nine clean sheets in the Champions League en route to glory in Porto back in May and has translated that form into the Premier League too.
His display against Brentford earlier this season in a backs-to-the-wall victory in west London was outstanding and he has gone on to become one of the best, if not arguably the best, shotstopper in the top flight over the past 12 months.
He hasn’t just impressed Chelsea fans either, as he has been nominated as one of the nine players chosen in the overall Fans’ Footballer of the Year awards, chosen by over 140 sports experts and journalists.
The conductor of Chelsea’s midfield has already been named the best midfielder in Europe and is in the running for the Ballon D’Or after a superb 2021. Having appeared to be on his way out under Frank Lampard, he has been rejuvenated with Tuchel in charge.
He ended as Chelsea’s top scorer in the league last season with seven (all penalties, admittedly) but if you watch the Blues with the Italian in the side and then without him, the difference is astronomic.
And as with his teammate, Jorginho is part of the nine man shortlist for the overall Fan’s Footballer of the Year as well.
Chelsea’s centre back has been another player who has benefitted hugely from the arrival of Tuchel having looked to be close to the exit door with Lampard at the helm.
Is he playing for a new contract? Perhaps but you cannot deny just how good the German defender has been in 2021. He’s the first name on the team sheet for Tuchel and is enjoying the best year of his career.
What more can you say about Kante? His teammate was named Europe’s best midfielder as previously mentioned but Kante could have easily won it himself. His performances in the run to the Champions League final, and then in the final itself, were nothing short of sensational.
Kante is having his minutes managed well by Tuchel this season but he is still the best midfielder at the club, one of the few truly world class players in west London, and is continuing to perform at an elite level consistently.
A special mention also goes to Mason Mount, although not selected by Sam, as he’s been nominated alongside Mendy and Jorginho in the nine man shortlist for the overall Fans’ Footballer of the Year as well.
